Covestro Taiwan Wins APAC Excellence Award in Corporate Responsibility Category

● Winner of “Corporate Responsibility” ● Runner-ups of “Campaign of the Year (small budget)”
6 December, 2018: Covestro Taiwan has picked up first place in the ‘Corporate Responsibility’ category of this year’s APAC Excellence Awards, at a ceremony in Dublin, Ireland.

The company won with its “Ocean Protection Storytelling – Partners with Government” project, which works hand-in-hand with Taiwan’s national parks and museums to awaken children’s curiosity about the world’s oceans and why taking care of the environment is so important.  Covestro Taiwan was also a runner-up in “Campaign of the Year (small budget)” with its “Meeting of Minds - Covestro & Solar Impulse”, a sustainability program designed for Swiss pioneer Bertrand Piccard and former Covestro CEO, Patrick Thomas, when they visited Taiwan in September 2017 to talk with young people and encourage them to think and live more sustainably.

“We are delighted that our colleagues in Taiwan have been acknowledged for the hard work and dedication they have shown in promoting how sustainability is such a huge part of how we operate at Covestro,” says Christian Haessler, Head Global Sustainability of Covestro.  “We know how important it is to teach young people all over the world the importance of living in a more sustainable way and respecting our oceans, so it is especially pleasing that we have been able to reach thousands of children in Taiwan via our communications activities.”

The Asia-Pacific Excellence Awards are hosted by Communication Director, an internationally-focused magazine for corporate communications, PR and public affairs.  The Awards were created to honour the most outstanding achievements of communications professionals in their field. The awards are also part of a global implementation of Excellence Awards, also rolled out in Africa, North America, Latin America and Europe. The Jury members’ range of expertise covers a wide scope, from the perspective of both in-house and agency communication departments. The Jury evaluates the innovation, implementation, strategy and impact of the projects submitted, to reward the best in PR communications.

Marine litter is one of the greatest challenges we face today, and is especially important for an island like Taiwan, which is surrounded by sea. Covestro Taiwan partners with National Parks and National Museums on marine life and science topics, to help educate young people through storytelling using an English/Chinese bilingual picture book “Bright Minds for a Brighter World” which was localized from an original version from Covestro Thailand. Thanks to the company and its partners’ efforts, a total of 13,464 kids from 41 schools in Taiwan were reached within one year.

Runner-ups of “Campaign of the Year (small budget)” – Meeting of Minds - Covestro & Solar Impulse

Solar Impulse made history in 2016 as the first aircraft to fly around the world without a drop of fuel and Covestro was an official partner. Bertrand Piccard, the initiator and founder of Solar Impulse, along with Patrick Thomas, Covestro CEO, who retired earlier this year, were invited to Taiwan to share their vision for a cleaner and more sustainable future at the World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) in front of over 3,000 people. During their visit to Taiwan, they also spent time encouraging around 450 students to dream bigger and think and live more sustainably, during a “Pushing Boundaries” campus forum hosted by “National Taiwan Normal University”.

“Sustainability activities are not successful without the strong support from partners as well as the passionate Covestro Taiwan volunteers,” said Renee Chen, Communications Manager of Covestro Taiwan. “Together we can all make the world a brighter place.”
