Together, We have the Power to Restore Our Earth™

Covestro Taiwan and wpd Taiwan Energy Join Together To Support Environmental Education Activities

Covestro Taiwan and wpd Taiwan Energy signed a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a sustainable future.

22 April, 2021.  Covestro Taiwan and wpd Taiwan Energy have agreed today, Earth Day 2021, to jointly promote awareness of environmental education initiatives throughout Taiwan, via activities to a network of schools. Both parties signed a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the German Institute Taipei (GIT) witnessed by Dr. Thomas Prinz, Director General of GIT and Mr. Axel Limberg, Chief Representative and Executive Director of the German Trade Office Taipei (GTO).

The theme for Earth Day 2021 is ‘Restore Our Earth™’, which focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies and the kind of innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems.

“Covestro and wpd’s collaboration is a remarkable step towards eco-friendly development for a sustainable future,” said Dr. Thomas Prinz, Director General of GIT. “Striving to ‘Restore Our Earth™’ is not only aligning with Germany’s sustainability policy but also a factor in creating an ecologically responsible society.”

Covestro MagicMaterial School STEM event will now include experiments about wind power knowledge from wpd Energy Taiwan while Covestro Taiwan will train wpd volunteers and authorize its copyrighted interactive bilingual APP - “Bright Minds for a Brighter World: The Adventures of Young Guardians”, aimed at encouraging children to develop a responsible attitude to waste while opening their eyes to a problem: how plastic waste ends up in the oceans via waterways.  All these programs will fall under the new CSR MOU so both Covestro Taiwan and wpd can work on rolling out new concepts in the future.

“A healthy planet is not an option - it is a necessity. We have the ability to make a difference in every industry and every area of life, but that can only happen when we work together,“ said Lynette Chung, Chief Sustainability Officer, Covestro AG.  “Renewable energy is an important element of our strategy to become fully circular and support a climate-neutral society. It is our honor to work with wpd, as we have a shared objective to focus more on our younger generations to increase their knowledge in key areas such as sustainability.”

Through its STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) and environmental education program, high-tech polymer manufacturer, Covestro, with its vision of “We will be fully circular,” aims to engage more with younger generations, by cultivating their interest in science education, ocean conservation and waste management.

As the largest German renewable energy company in Taiwan, wpd wants to promote and advocate  themes around environmental protection and sustainable development, while participating in educational activities.

“Together with volunteers from the local community, we have established wpdEEC, the first wind-themed environmental education center in Taiwan,” said Achim Berge Olsen, COO of wpd AG. “Like Covestro which uses environmental storytelling to help children be more aware of the current ocean crisis and what’s happening with waste management in their country, our colleagues and community volunteers have developed a series of DIY toys and group games to help children understand wind power within the environment.”

This MOU between Covestro and wpd in the field of environmental education is another important step in Taiwan’s environment protection efforts,” said Axel Limberg, Chief Representative and Executive Director of the GTO. “It also shows that German companies are actively contributing to an environmentally sustainable future.”
